Map

September 2006. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site. Contexts 1000-1010.
This work revealed a ditch that contained a probable sherd of Late Saxon Thetford Ware dated to the 11th to 12th centuries. The sherd is abraded and likely residual. The ditch was cut through a thick, waterlogged alluvial layer that overlaid the waterlogged sandy natural. Several layers of 19th to 20th century made ground were encountered overlying the archaeological horizon, and these are interpreted as deposits intended to raise the ground level in order avoid the high water-table.
See report (S1) for further details. The results of this work are also summarised in (S2).
