Summary

A possible ring ditch of unknown date is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. Numerous interpretations of such features are possible: it might, for example, represent a small Bronze Age round barrow, a round house of prehistoric or Roman date, or a Roman or post-Roman stack stand. At the same time, the possibility that it is not of archaeological origin, but rather the product of recent agricultural activity, cannot be ruled out.

Map

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs taken in 1946 (S1), centred at TG 4128 1900. A mark may also be visible at this location on aerial photographs from 1963 (S2). If the cropmark represents a genuine archaeological ring ditch, a number of different interpretations are possible. Although rather small and low-lying, it might, for example, represent the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow. Alternatively, it could mark the site of a round house, although it is rather isolated and not obviously associated with the multi-period field boundaries and trackways that surround it (part of NHER 45072). Perhaps a more plausible interpretation is that it surrounded a Roman or post-Roman stack stand. At the same time, the possibility that it is merely a product of recent agricultural activity cannot be discounted.

The ring ditch is roughly circular in plan and measures approximately 10.5m in diameter.
