Summary

A possible ring ditch, perhaps the remains of a Bronze Age round barrow, is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. Although it lies below the 5m OD contour line, which is rather low-lying for a prehistoric monument of this type, its size and general appearance support this interpretation. A Bronze Age macehead was recovered from a site approximately 190m to the northwest (NHER 8528) and pot boilers have been found at locations approximately 400m to the south (NHER 19431 and 32127). At the same time, the possibility that the ring ditch is a product of recent agricultural activity cannot be ruled out.

Map

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A possible ring ditch is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 4457 1873. It lies below 5m OD, which, given both the usual ‘sky line’ location for such monuments and the Broads area’s history of fluctuations in relative water levels, might argue against this interpretation. Its size and general appearance, however, support it, and prehistoric activity has been recorded in the area. At the same time, the possibility that the cropmark is a product of recent agricultural activity cannot be ruled out.

The east side of the ring ditch is masked but it appears to be slightly ovoid in plan. It measures up to 30m in diameter. A possible internal pit, perhaps containing a burial or other ceremonial deposit, is visible southeast of centre.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 11 October 2006.
