October 2006. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of a D-shaped enclosure of possible Iron Age to early Roman date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3022 1116 and were previously recorded as part of NHER 8493. The enclosure is defined by a 2m wide ditch and has an asymmetrical D-shaped plan with maximum external dimensions of 51m by 43m. An 8m wide break in the ditch on the west side of the enclosure appears to be a deliberate entrance. A second possible entrance, measuring 3.5m across, is present in the southeast side of the enclosure. It is possible that this enclosure is of Iron Age to early Roman date and it could relate to settlement activity. A second D-shaped enclosure cropmark is present 580m to the northeast (NHER 45119). An incomplete regular curvilinear enclosure cropmark is also visible 120m to the northeast (NHER 45124). The relationship between these three enclosures is not certain. The D-shaped enclosure recorded at this location does not seem to have any relationship to surrounding rectilinear field boundary cropmarks (NHER 45123).
