Monitoring of excavation of pipeline trench. From Context 1.
The site crossed the former graveyard of the parish church destoryed by the sea in 1382. A trial trench was dug across Keswick road to locate the position of the existing services. Fragmentary remains of three burials were revealed with no signs of grave cuts. A second trench was dug across the road to reveal the existing services. The remains of a possible structure or floor were found, truncated by the service trenches. It consisted of a surface of knapped flints in two bands, each of four lines of flint. The bands were seperated by three lines of single brick. The pipe trench was opened aong Keswick road for 150m.Over 20 articuated burials were found in the western 60m of the trench, along with fragments of medieval pottery from grave fills. In January 2007 a further pipe trench was opened in a roadside property, Captain's Haunt. The trench was probably too shallow to expose any in situ burials, although several bones were recorded at the south-western end of the trench. To the south of the trench a north-south wall was recorded, built from flint cobbles. It contained two fragments of medieval stone tracery, a door jamb in Caen limestone and a voussoir in Barnack limestone.
