Map

The test pit was located in the bottom of the garden, the southernmost end, in a gap in the hedge. This put at most a metre from the Diary Field behind, in an area that [1] suggested might be a household midden. The topsoil layer produced a large quantity of ceramic building material, eventually about 16.5kg along with two small sherds of Thetford ware, one of them decorated. Around 20cm down the soil became full of gravel, rather like a garden path. Below this was a small lens of charcoal, with very few finds. 15cm below this the soil became more compacted, with considerably less ceramic building material, and therefore a new context. In the next 20cm we came across pieces of medieval glazed pottery and two pieces of Anglo-Saxon. At about 65cm down we hit a layer of chalky soil which we thought might be natural rock. However, the actual natural was only a few centimeteres below this. We dug a small way into it to confirm this.
