Full Description
October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks described below were previously recorded as part of NHER 24982.
Two large rectilinear positive cropmarks are visible on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 4052 1833. The site may also be visible as a cropmark on (S2). Given their size and complex shape, as well as the presence of two probable pits or post holes, it is possible that the cropmarks represent one or more buildings. These buildings presumably possessed earth or clay floors, or their floors were perhaps robbed or worn away by use, thus producing a positive cropmark. If this interpretation is correct, the buildings or structures are likely to have been associated with Green Farm immediately to the southeast (NHER 37142), and to be of medieval and/or post medieval date. Alternatively, the cropmarks might not be of archaeological origin, but rather the product of recent agricultural activity (related to former manure heaps or feeders, for example).
It is notable that the smaller of the two marks has a distinctive banded appearance. There is no obvious relationship between the cropmarks and any of the multi-period enclosures and field boundaries visible in the surrounding area (NHER 45072).
