Full Description
March 2005. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of undated, but possibly post medieval field boundaries, are visible on aerial photographs to the east of The Causeway, Hickling (S1). The site is centred on TG 4164 2356.
The boundary, running from TG 4170 2342 to TG 4166 2351 to the edge of the common, fits well into the pattern of fields and drains marked on pre-Enclosure map of Hickling reproduced in (S2) and the 1842 Tithe map (S3). Many of the other cropmarks are roughly perpendicular to this boundary and therefore may be associated, although they do not correspond with the rest of the post medieval field layout. It is therefore possible that they represent an earlier post medieval or even late medieval arrangement of fields, this is also suggested by the fact that they are roughly parallel with the boundaries and drains defining the northern edge of the common, which are also pre-parliamentary enclosure (S2).
All of these cropmarks were identified and mapped from aerial photographs where no stereo pair view of the site was possible and therefore some caution must be applied to the resultant mapping.
S. Massey (NMP), 29 March 2005.
