NHER 43743 (Monument record) - Cropmarks of unknown date, possibly Roman, east of Eastfield Farm

The group of cropmark ditched features of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs to east of Eastfield Farm, Hickling (S1). The site is centred on TG 4296 2341. These features are likely to relate to field boundaries or possibly part of an enclosure. The date of these features is unknown, although an Iron Age to Roman date may be indicated by the morphology of the cropmarks. A Roman pottery fragment has been found in close proximity to these cropmarks (NHER 12457) and this may corroborate this suggested dating.

Centred on TG 4295 2334 is a rectilinear arrangement of ditches, which may represent part of an enclosure or field, measuring 100m across, although the eastern side cannot be identified. It is possible that the northwestern ditch actually continues to the north and joins with the ditch at TG 4294 2347, forming a large polygonal enclosed area. Two parallel ditch segments at TG 4296 2340 may indicate a trackway or possibly part of an internal division within the larger enclosure or field. Although it is however possible that it is not contemporary with the enclosure or field boundary ditches.
