Full Description
June 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of field boundaries and trackways of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs to the southeast of Rose Farm, Potter Heigham (S1) to (S3). The site is centred on TG 4162 2024. These cropmarks are located within a larger multiphase cropmark site (NHER 43719). Some elements of this site are roughly parallel with Church Lane to the south and therefore a medieval to post medieval date may be possible for some elements of this site. Church Lane is likely to be medieval in origin and is certainly marked on the 1797 Faden map (S4). None of the boundaries or trackways mapped are marked on the 1840 Potter Heigham Tithe map (S5). It is possible that these cropmarks reveal elements of the medieval and pre-parliamentary enclosure post medieval landscape.
The site consists of two possible trackways indicated by double ditched linears, one running from TG 4139 2018 to TG 4140 2027 and another running from TG 4167 2023 to TG 4162 2024. This second trackway has a funnelled opening and possibly leads into/from a field or stock enclosure. A roughly parallel linear to the north of the main track may indicate a multiple trackway arrangement. Both of the trackways are either roughly parallel or perpendicular to the Church Lane to the south. Perpendicular linears running up to these trackways are likely to be field boundaries. Two additional groups of fragmentary field boundaries have been included within this site, on the grounds that they have similar alignments, although this relationship is not certain. These features are located at TG 4144 2029 to TG 4162 2029.
