Map

June 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a field system of unknown, but possibly Iron Age to Roman date are visible on aerial photographs to the north and south of Church Lane, Potter Heigham (S1) to (S4). The site is centred on TG 4159 2009. These cropmarks are located within a larger multiphase cropmark site (NHER 43719). These cropmarks appear to pre-date Church Lane, which is likely to be medieval in date. The morphology of these ditched fields and trackways would fit well with an Iron Age to Roman date.

The site largely consists of a series of rectilinear fields, trackways and ditched boundaries arranged on a broadly co-axial system, which are visible in three clusters at TG 4190 2019, TG 4137 2019 and TG 4164 2001. The majority of the ditches are aligned northwest to southeast and northeast to southwest, although the northeastern part of the site is characterised by curvilinear rather than rectilinear boundaries. It is possible that this represents a different phases of the site. Although the field system is quite fragmentary, there does appear to be a relatively common field division size of 50-60m visible in the areas where the cropmarks are more complete. Double ditches define some of the fields and these are likely to represent trackways running alongside of the fields.
