Map

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
A group of cropmarks and earthworks consisting of linear ditches and pit-like features are visible on Ordnance Survey aerial photographs from 1973 (S1). This site appears to represent several phases of activity. A broad L-shaped ditch can be seen running from TF 9558 4256 to TF 9552 4252, at which point it turns north and continues to TF 9549 4257. The ditch varied in width from 3-5m and may represent a division of land on the valley side. Two parallel linears are also visible, both between 130-5m in length and 1.5-3m wide and these may represent part of a wide trackway. To the east of the site, as the land drops down into the river valley, several slight linear earthworks are visible, these are likely to be drainage ditches of possible post-medieval date. Although they may be agricultural in origin. In addition to these channels are two large sub-circular pit-like features, centred on TF 9554 4259, approximately 12m across and another, 11m across, at TF 9554 4261. These were mapped due the clarity and roundness of the cropmarks, although the field is covered in elongated curvilinear geological features, it is possible that these more circular ones have a similar origin, especially as they are quite large for pits.
