Summary

A field system, possibly dating to the Iron Age and/or Roman period, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Although no dating evidence has been recovered from the site, its general character and orientation is comparable to other field systems of this probable date mapped elsewhere in Norfolk. A number of other archaeological features of varying date are also visible across this same area (NHER 36755, 49160 and 36756), demonstrating that the field system represents just one of several phases of activity. Undated sub-surface features observed in a pipeline trench to the west of Grimmer’s Craft (NHER 40805) may relate to the site described here, as may some of the undated cropmarks recorded to the northeast of the site (NHER 38853).

Map

November 2006. Norfolk NMP.
Some of the cropmarks described below were previously recorded as part of NHER 36755 and 36756.

A field system is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S6), centred at TG 3357 2965. The most complete parts of the field system are visible at TG 3321 2976 and TG 3335 2957. Although no dating evidence has been recovered from the site, and despite the rather fragmentary nature of the cropmarks, the orientation and general character of the field system is similar to that of field systems of probable Iron Age and/or Roman date mapped elsewhere in Norfolk. It is comparable, for example, to NHER 38499 at Thorpe Market and NHER 27339 at Hemsby. It appears to overlie a probable Bronze Age ring ditch (NHER 36755), while field boundaries and enclosures of seemingly later date (NHER 49160 and 36756) have a very different orientation. Features recorded at the southeast corner of the site (NHER 40805) and to its northeast (NHER 38853) could include some contemporary elements.

The field system, which has a broadly co-axial layout, is visible across an area measuring approximately 975m by 715m. Some of the principal boundaries appear to be double ditched.
