Full Description
September 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of an undated enclosure and ditches, possibly former field boundaries, are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Hobland Plantation, Gorleston on Sea (S1-S4). The site is centred on TG 5148 0192. Although these features are undated it is possible that they are late prehistoric in date. They are either overlain by or overlie ditches associated with an area of settlement and fields of possibly Iron Age to Roman date (NHER 45052); the relationship is hard to ascertain from the cropmarks.
At TG 5147 0194 is a small rectilinear enclosure, measuring 35m by at least 30m (S4). The remainder of the site consists of fragmentary linears, which may be the remains of field boundaries associated with the enclosure as they follow the same alignment.
S. Massey (NMP), 14 September 2006.
January 2011. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site immediately to south of ambulance station.
Although one of the trenches should have coincided with the eastern side of the small rectilinear enclosure at TG 5147 0194 no corresponding sub-surface feature was identified.
See report (S5) and NHER 57862 for further details.
Amended by P. Watkins (HES), 3 January 2019.
May 2011. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of two additional proposed development sites, one to the south of the area examined in January 2011 and one to the east.
Although several of the trenches excavated should have coincided with cropmarks in this group (including the small rectilinear enclosure at TG 5147 0194) no obviously corresponding features was identified.
See report (S6) and NHER 57862 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 6 January 2019.
March 2014. Trial Trenching.
Additional phase of evaluation at Beacon Park (Site 14; Trenches 19-27).
Although the trenches coincided with several of the cropmarks mapped in the vicinity of TG 5136 0196 no surviving sub-surface features was identified.
See report (S7) and NHER 57862 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 31 August 2019.
March 2023. Assessment of the Character and Significance of East Anglian Field Systems project.
The site described above was included in the dataset analysed for the Historic England-funded Assessment of East Anglian Field Systems project. See the project report (S8) for further details.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk County Council Environment Team), 22 March 2023.
