Summary

The cropmarks of a boundary ditch of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs in-between Cliff Park High School and Marine Parade. Map

October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a boundary ditch of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs in-between Cliff Park High School and Marine Parade (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 5296 0230. The site of the cropmarks has since been developed into housing.

The boundary would appear to pre-date those rectangular fields marked on the 1813 Gorleston Enclosure map (S4). The boundary does not show any obvious relationship with any of surrounding archaeological sites also visible as cropmarks. It is possible that it is Roman or medieval in date, although it appears to either overlie or is overlain by ditches forming part of the Roman fields to the south (NHER 43495).

The ditch runs from TG 5262 0249 to TG 5295 0230 then runs sharply back to the southwest to TG 5267 0203. A short section of ditch, 37m long, can be seen to continue the line of the northern arm of the boundary to the east.
