November 2006. Norfolk NMP
The site of a World War Two searchlight battery is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The searchlight battery was located on the recreation ground on the eastern side of Horning village at TG 3419 1747. The trefoil shaped group of emplacements had been mostly removed and were only visible as low earthworks by July 1946 (S1). Nine huts or other structures were still present along the west and north sides of the recreation ground. A zigzag slit trench was located on the eastern side of the site. This probably served as an open air raid shelter rather than as a defensive position. Two camps located 170m to the east (NHER 45259) and 720m to the southeast (NHER 45258) were probably associated with this battery. The emplacements are clearly visible as cropmarks on the football pitch in April 1950 (S2). All but one of the huts had been removed by that date. The searchlight battery comprised of two small searchlights and one large one and is described by a former resident in (S3).
