Map

November 2006. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of enclosures and linear ditches are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3184 1743 in Hoveton House Park (NHER 30513). An incomplete rectilinear enclosure cropmark is centred on TG 3185 1733 in the southern part of the group. It is only partly visible, but it appears to have internal dimensions of 82m by 58m. A second enclosure, measuring 37m by 14m internally, is located at TG 3195 1739. This enclosure lies adjacent to a double ditched boundary or narrow trackway on a northwest to southeast alignment. Other ditch cropmarks in the eastern part of the park are present on more north to south and west to east alignments and appear to cut across the enclosures. A curvilinear ditch extends across the western part of the park on a roughly northwest to southeast alignment between TG 3170 1756 and TG 3187 1742. The function of this ditch is unclear, but it may relate to a former path or trackway. The area of the park in which all of these cropmarks are located was laid out at some time between Faden’s 1797 Map of Norfolk (S2) and the 1828 Hoveton St John enclosure map (S3). It is likely that the cropmark relate to property and field boundaries of medieval to post medieval date that predate the establishment of the park. Medieval and post medieval finds have been recorded in the vicinity of the cropmarks (NHER 25901).
