Summary

Cropmarks of trackways and field boundaries of probable Roman date are visible on aerial photographs. Two roughly parallel trackways separated by fields are present. It is likely that they are part of a Roman field system present further to the west (NHER 49180).

Map

December 2006. Norfolk NMP
Cropmarks of trackways and field boundaries of probable Roman date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). These cropmarks are centred on TG 3092 1959. Two ditch defined trackways are present as cropmarks. The first of these extends for at least 415m on a roughly east to west alignment between TG 3120 1943 and TG 3079 1945. It is defined by single ditches spaced up to 12m apart. Two parallel ditch cropmarks are present to the east of Two Saints Farm. These lie on a slightly different alignment, but may extend the trackway for a further 160m westwards to TG 3063 1947. However, it is also possible that they are post medieval cropmarks associated with the farm. Two short sections of linear ditch, probably field boundaries, lead off of the main trackway cropmark at right angles. To the south of the trackway a short section of linear ditch is present on a parallel alignment to it between TG 3098 1928 and TG 3090 1929. This ditch may align with a field boundary further to the west (NHER 49180) and possibly defines the southern boundary of fields to the south of trackway. If this is the case the fields to the south of the trackway are 166m long.

The second trackway lies on a west southwest to east northeast alignment and extends for 250m between TG 3087 1967 and TG 3110 1972. It is also defined by two single linear ditches spaced up to 13m apart. Extending to the south southeast of this trackway are two field boundary ditches. They appear to define at least one rectilinear field between the two trackways. The most complete of these fields measures 114m wide by up to 236m long, assuming that it extends all the way between the two trackways. An L-shaped ditch to the north of the second trackway also appears to be a related field boundary. The pattern of fields and trackways appears to be a continuation of a Roman field system further to the west (NHER 49180). Undated, possibly medieval to post medieval, ditch cropmarks cut across these trackways and field boundaries.
