Full Description
October 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The earthworks and soilmarks of a possible medieval to post medieval post mill are visible on aerial photographs to the east of the Coast Road, Hopton on Sea (S1). The site is centred on TM 5339 9946. It is possible that this mill mound is a re-used Bronze Age round barrow, although this is not certain. Other ring ditches and round barrows have been recorded within a possible barrow cemetery to the west (NHER 43527).
A light circular soilmark, 17m in diameter, is visible in 1953 (S1). The interior appears to be raised and is surrounded by a distinct light ring. The internal circular pit, 5.5m across, is bisected by a cross of lighter material and is also edged by a band of lighter material, possibly indicating a compacted or stone layer. However it must be noted that the in 1989 a ring ditch is visible in this location possibly indicating that the soilmarks or the cropmarks are showing a reversed picture of the archaeological features.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 October 2006.
