Summary

The cropmarks of an area of post medieval field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Caldecott Hall, Belton with Browston and Fritton St Olaves. A number of these boundaries correspond with or abut divisions marked on the 1838 Belton and Fritton Tithe maps. Several of these also follow the parish boundary between the two parishes, which could indicate a medieval origin for some of the boundaries.

Map

November 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of an area of post medieval field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Caldecott Hall, Belton with Browston and Fritton St Olaves (S1-S6). These former buildings are marked on the 1838 Belton Tithe map (S7). The site is centred on TG 4878 0129. These post-medieval boundaries are overlying a series of fragmentary field boundaries and enclosures of unknown, but possibly late prehistoric to Roman date (NHER 49193). The site also appears to overlie the edge of another field system of unknown, but possibly Roman to post medieval date (NHER 43592).

Many of the former boundaries are visible as broad banks, up to 23m across, however the vast width of these features is likely to be a product of plough spread surface material producing cropmarks and soilmarks. A number of these boundaries correspond with or abut divisions marked on the 1838 Belton and Fritton Tithe maps (S7-S8). Several of these also follow the parish boundary between the two parishes, which could indicate a medieval origin for some of the boundaries.
