Summary

A former poor allotment, now named Dyball’s Allotment, is depicted on the East Ruston Enclosure Map of 1810. Former doles, probably used for shallow peat extraction in the medieval or post medieval period, are visible in the southwest corner of the area as vegetation marks and perhaps slight earthworks on aerial photographs. They are comparable to those at East Ruston Allotment (NHER 22943) 400m to the south.

Map

January 2007. Norfolk NMP.
A former poor allotment, now named Dyball’s Allotment, is depicted on the East Ruston Enclosure Map of 1810 (S1). Probable former doles, reflecting the cutting of surface peat in the medieval or post medieval period, are visible in the southwest corner of the area as linear vegetation marks and perhaps slight earthworks on aerial photographs (S2)-(S4), centred at TG 3456 2924. They could instead be drainage features, perhaps associated with tree planting. On recent aerial photographs, e.g. (S5), the area is obscured by woodland cover and it is not known whether any traces remain visible on the ground.
