Full Description
January 2007. Norfolk NMP.
Several ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 3331 2604. Although they are undated, their general appearance would suggest that they are associated with the medieval to post-medieval hall (NHER 8189) immediately to their northeast. Some may have acted as drains and/or boundary ditches. Only the substantial ditch at the north end of the site, and its offshoot to the north, are convincing as archaeology. The other features may be of modern origin.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 5 January 2007.
November 2022-April 2023. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of groundworks associated with installation of new water main.
This work identified ditches likely to correspond with both of the north-to-south aligned cropmarks that coincided with the pipeline easement (one at TG 3319 2603 and the other at TG 3343 2608). Unfortunately neither of these features produced any dating evidence, although the easternmost of the two was possibly broadly contemporary with a perpendicular ditch that contained medieval/post-medieval brick fragments. It should though also be noted that two other north-to-south aligned ditches exposed in this field were found to contain small amounts of Roman pottery.
See report (S3) and NHER 68331 for further details.
