Full Description
November 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a group of rectilinear enclosures and trackways of possible Roman or post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2) to the east of Coronation Terrace, Burgh Castle. The site is centred on TG 4832 0453. These cropmarks appear to follow the same alignment as the enclosures and boundaries associated with the Roman vicus to the immediate west (NHER 49204). Roman finds have also been found in this general area (NHER 24742). It is therefore possible that these enclosures are the same date, however it must be noted that the alignment of the site also corresponds with that of the surrounding post medieval field layout.
The site consists of a double ditched boundary or trackway running intermittently along the southern extent of the cropmarks, from TG 4818 0448 to TG 4833 0447. Conjoined to this to the north is a rectangular enclosure, which is defined by double ditches or bordered by further trackways. This measures 70m by 78m (internally). A further fragmentary rectilinear enclosure is visible within the northeastern corner of the site, potentially 45m by 38m. Although the northern ditch coincides with the post medieval boundaries to the north. This may be indicative of Roman alignments and boundaries persisting into the modern landscape and may not indicate that the cropmarks of are not Roman in date.
