Summary

A geophysical survey undertaken in 2012/2013 identified a probable ditch, the orientation of which suggests it was most likely associated with a post-medieval field boundary. Subsequent trial trenching exposed this ditch and a small number of other features, none of which produced dating evidence.

2004-2005. Desk-based Assessment.
Archaeological assessment of western route options for Norwich Northern Distributor Road.
See reports (S1) and (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 7 July 2019.

April 2012-April 2013. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Route (Block 19).
A roughly north-to-south aligned linear trend anomaly is likely to represent an archaeological feature, most likely a ditch associated with a former field boundary. The orientation of this feature is identical to that of the surrounding post-medieval field boundaries. Although a range of other anomalies were identified these are not thought to be of archaeological significance, being most likely of agricultural or geological origin. A linear dipolar anomaly at the eastern edge of the field indicates the presence of a service pipe.
There was no evidence for features associated with the north-east to south-west aligned cropmarks previously identified in this area (NHER 18192).
See report (S3) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 4 August 2015.

April-September 2015. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site on proposed line of Norwich Northern Distributor Road (Field H13).
The six trenches excavated at this located revealed only a small number of potentially archaeologically significant features, none of which produced any dating evidence.
Three ditches were identified, one of which clearly corresponded with the linear geophysical anomaly. There was again no evidence for surviving remains associated with the two cropmarks mapped at this location (NHER 18192).
Other remains were limited to a single pit with a charcoal-flecked, but otherwise sterile fill and a feature interpreted as a probable tree-throw hollow.
No unstratified finds were recovered.
See report (S4) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 13 May 2019.
