NHER 49244 (Monument record) - Medieval to post medieval drainage features and a road

The earthworks and vegetation marks of a possible road or causeway across the marshes and a small group of medieval to post medieval drainage ditches and embankments are visible on aerial photographs on Langley Marshes (S1-S4).

The main component of this site would appear to be the remains of a route or causeway across the marshes. This is extremely straight and consists of a series of closely set and flat-topped banks, with ditches in-between. The raised linear routeway runs from the River Yare to the River Wensum across the narrowest part of The Island. The embankment is cut by several drainage ditches, although most of these date to the twentieth century and cannot help to date the earthworks. There were no Tithe or Enclosure maps available for this area at the time of recording, although the route does appear to pre-date features depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition map. To the north of the causeway is a series of sinuous drainage ditches that are likely to have developed from natural drainage creeks
