Summary

A dispersed group of multi-period and undated cropmarks, the majority of which are fragments of boundary ditches, are visible on aerial photographs to the west of Bradwell village. Any groups within the area of this multi-phase parent site that can be phased and/or dated have been recorded separately; see NHER 30302, 45215, 49257-9 for site records.

Map

May 2008. Norfolk NMP.
A dispersed group of multi-period and undated cropmarks, the majority of which are fragments of boundary ditches, are visible on aerial photographs to the west of Bradwell village (S1-S5). Any groups within the area of this multi-phase parent site that can be phased and/or dated have been recorded separately; see NHER 30302, 45215, 49257-9 for site records. These phased cropmarks are thought to range in date from the late prehistoric period to the post medieval. The fragmentary cropmarks recorded under this parent record are too incomplete and/or non-diagnostic of any particular period and therefore are all undated.

Although the site is quite large, the main concentration of cropmarks is around TG 4991 0352. This area represents a particularly dense zone of cropmark formation, revealing a series of enclosures, fields and trackways, which have been recorded under NHER 30302 and 45215. The fragmentary ditches that have been recorded under this parent number do not appear to relate to either site. In this area is a fragmentary rectilinear enclosure or field at TG 4987 0353, although incomplete it potentially measures 120m by 40m (S5). The majority of the site consists of fragmentary single ditches probably representing former field boundaries relating to several phases of fields. A number of these linear cropmarks appear to represent double ditched arrangements, such as TG 5022 0332, and are therefore likely to represent sections of trackways

January 2017. Geophysical Survey
Magnetometer survey of field to north of Beccles Road.
Although the area examined coincided with numerous cropmarks in this group no corresponding anomalies were identified.
See report (S6) and NHER 67115 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 11 June 2023.

March 2019. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of proposed development site adjacent to Beccles Road.
Although the excavated trenches coincided with a number of the cropmarks in this group none were found to be associated with surviving sub-surface remains.
Information from draft report. See NHER 67115 for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 10 June 2023.

March 2023. Assessment of the Character and Significance of East Anglian Field Systems project.
The site described above was included in the dataset analysed for the Historic England-funded Assessment of East Anglian Field Systems project. See the project report (S7) for further details.
