Full Description
March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
A group of parallel ditches is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 3205 2784. The ditches are undated but their close spacing and the slightly curvilinear outline of some of them suggests that they may have originated as the boundaries of medieval strip fields. They appear to overlie an enclosure to their southwest, which is of probable Iron Age and/or Roman date (NHER 45251). A group of very similar boundaries is also visible 100m to the southeast (NHER 45253). A few of the ditches are depicted on Honing Tithe Map (S2), indicating that these at least remained in use into the post medieval period. The boundaries may continue to the east but there is poor coverage of this area on the aerial photographs. There may be further linear cropmarks in the northern part of the site but they are difficult to distinguish from recent agricultural marks and have not been mapped by the NMP.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 26 March 2007.
