Summary

A group of linear ditches, visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs, almost certainly represent former field boundaries of probable medieval to post medieval date. They fit the same general pattern of enclosure as that depicted on historic and modern maps. They represent just one phase of activity within a palimpsest cropmark landscape, which includes features of probable Bronze Age (NHER 36755) and Iron Age and/or Roman (NHER 45240) date.

Map

March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
Some of the cropmarks described below were previously recorded as part of NHER 36755.

A group of linear ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 3346 2963. They have the same general orientation as the pattern of enclosure depicted on historic and modern maps, e.g. Crostwight Tithe Map (S4), and a medieval to post medieval date seems plausible. Other cropmarks in the area, such as the ring ditch NHER 36755 in the northwest corner of the site, or the fragmentary field system NHER 45240 which surrounds it, represent earlier phases of activity. By comparison, NHER 26756 and NHER 36757 immediately to the southwest and southeast, may be closer in date to the features described here. There is no known association with the features identified just beyond the limits of the site during a recent watching brief (NHER 40805; Tatler 2004 (S5)).
