Summary

Fragments of a possible field system, of unknown date, are visible as faint cropmarks on aerial photographs. The fragmentary ditches that make up the site are overlapped by the site of a possible Roman practice camp (NHER 45243) and post medieval field boundaries (NHER 30320). Their faint appearance, together with their orientation, which is at odds with the field pattern depicted on 19th- and 20th-century maps, suggests that they are the earlier features, and may be of Iron Age or even Bronze Age date.

Map

March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
Fragments of a possible field system are faintly visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1), centred at TG 3439 2887. The ditches that make up the site are overlapped by a possible Roman practice camp (NHER 45243) and post medieval field boundaries (NHER 30320). Their faint appearance, together with their orientation, which is at odds with the field pattern depicted on 19th- and 20th-century maps, suggests that they are the earlier features, and they may be of Iron Age or even Bronze Age date.

It should be noted that due to an inadequate number of control points, rectification of the aerial photographs was poor, and this may have had a detrimental effect on the accuracy of the mapping.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 27 March 2007.
