Map

March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a fragmentary group of ditched field boundaries of possible late prehistoric to Roman date are visible on aerial photographs to the north of the Old Hall, Irstead (S1-S3). The site is centred on TG 3580 2031.

The site consists of dispersed and fragmentary group of ditched linear features, the majority of which are likely to be former field boundaries, possibly of late prehistoric to Roman date. The findspot of an Iron Age coin within the vicinity of the site may suggest an Iron Age date for at least some of the boundaries (NHER 8325). The site is likely to represent several phases of boundaries and ditches.

A number of the boundaries are double ditched and are likely to represent trackways, in particular the example located to the western edge of the site. The presence of these double ditched boundaries would suggest a series of trackways or droves running alongside and in-between fields and areas of pasture.
