Full Description
March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of undated and multi-period ditches, probably representing former enclosures, field boundaries and trackways, are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Catfield Hall (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 3770 2115.
The cropmarks clearly represent more than one phase of features. Finds dating to the Roman, Saxon, medieval and post medieval periods have been found in close proximity to the cropmarks (NHER 32151). A possible incomplete rectilinear enclosure or field located on the eastern edge of the site is clearly cut by or cuts a double ditched boundary or trackway (S1). It is possible that some of the ditches mapped, such as those in close proximity to the marshes to the south, may post medieval in date and related to drainage or perhaps earlier boundaries associated with the grounds of Catfield Hall.
A number of the ditches are aligned either NW-SE or NE-SW. Other similarly aligned and fragmentary ditches in this area have been interpreted as being Iron Age to Roman date field boundaries, such as NHER 11669 and 49316. Finds of a Roman date have been found to the east of this site (NHER 32151).
