Summary

A stone plaque inscribed 'TOLLGATE' was found in 1988, which was a marker stone erected by Lord Fisher in 1913 to commemorate the planting of the adjacent Tollgate Wood.

A stone plaque inscribed 'TOLLGATE' was found by the roadbuilders at this approximate point and set up by the roadside. It was wrongly advertised as being from a demolished tollgate, but in fact was a marker stone erected by Lord Fisher in 1913 to commemorate the planting of the adjacent Tollgate Wood – similar plaques are found by the other woods on the estate.
