Full Description
April 2007. Norfolk NMP
Two groups of earthwork pits, possibly relating to post medieval clay extraction, are visible on aerial photographs (S1). These pits are centred on TG 4155 0156. The pits are rectangular in plan and measure approximately 6m long by 2m wide. They are arranged in a regular, interlocking pattern, with each pit separated by a narrow baulk. A main group of pits is present along the bank of the River Yare. A further small group of about 8 pits is located to its northwest. It is likely that they are extraction pits of post medieval date, possibly for clay, but their exact function is unclear. Additional groups of pits are present further to the east (NHER 10423, 49349). The individual pits were not mapped and only the extent of the groups was recorded.

July 2009. Watching Brief.
Topsoil stripping along the line of a new soke dyke uncovered an area of brick fragments and burnt material at this location. Subsequent archaeological investigations uncovered the remains of two early post-medieval brick kilns and a number of clay extraction pits.
The new flood defences were resigned to allow these remains to be preserved in situ.
See NHER 52759 for further details.
