Full Description
Before 22 September 2006. Casual Find.
A Carolingian cruciform harness mount was found while gardening. It is a cast copper alloy mount with four equally sized arms decorated with moulded acanthus-derived ornament. The reverse is quite corroded, but x-rays(S2) have identified a pierced lug has on one arm and a scar indicating a matching lug on the opposing arm. The shape of the object has been compared to 9th century strap distributors from Southampton (S4) and West Rudham (NHER 32133), but the fixings of the back of this piece are inappropriate for a distributor and it is much more likely to have been a mount fixed over the crossing point of two straps.
