Full Description
January-February 2007. Geophysical Survey.
Magnetometer survey in advance of proposed creation of grazing marsh and reed-bed environments.
No anomalies interpreted as being definitely archaeological were identified during the survey.
However, this may be due to pedology rather than a lack of archaeological features: no trace of known former field boundaries or field drains were detected, suggesting a low soil magnetic susceptibility.
See report (S1) for further details.
J. Allen (NLA), 25 May 2007 and K. Hamilton (NLA) 13 May 2008.
May 2008. Trial Trenching.
Evaluation of site of proposed new reedbed habitat.
The sixteen trenches excavated revealed six ditches, four pits, two post holes and a probable tree throw hollow. None of these features produced any dating evidence, although it is thought that most were probable associated with post-medieval activity.
There was little correlation between the results of this work and those of the preceding geophysical survey.
See report (S2) for further details.
P. Watkins (HES), 15 April 2023.
