Full Description
March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a group of multiphase ditches, many of which are likely to be former field boundaries, are visible on aerial photographs to the west of Guttermere Bridge, Hickling (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 3962 2185.
The site consists of a small group of ditches predominantly aligned either NW-SE or NE-SW. These are likely to represent the remains of former field boundaries and probably also trackways, in the case of the double ditched features. The date of these features is not known, although similarly aligned field boundaries recorded to the north (NHER 49321) were possibly associated with Roman date material found in the area during fieldwalking and metal detecting undertaken in advance of the Bacton to Great Yarmouth pipeline (NHER 33994).
Given the proximity of this site to the alder carr and edge of Catfield marshes it is also possible that some of these linear features are actually post medieval and modern drainage ditches.
