Full Description
March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a group of predominantly post medieval ditches and a trackway are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Mill Lane, Catfield (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 3892 2121. Some components of this site may be earlier in date, possibly Roman.
A sinuous trackway runs north from the road towards the White House. This feature consists of a central ditch or hollow way, flanked on either side by bank, visible as soilmarks (S2). It seems likely that this feature is a former continuation of the Gipsies Lane, a track to the south. The date of this route is likely to be post medieval, however the sinuous hollow way could have medieval origins. To the west of this lane is a straighter boundary, more definitely of post medieval date. No tithe map was available for this area at the time of mapping and therefore it could not be ascertained how many of these features were still in use in the nineteenth century. A number of other fragmentary ditches and field boundaries mapped within this area appeared to be associated with the trackway, although some, in particular those aligned NW-SE or NE-SW may be earlier in date, see NHER 49316 and 35525 for nearby similarly aligned cropmarks thought to be of late prehistoric or Roman date.
