Map

March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of rectilinear enclosure of unknown, but possible late prehistoric to Roman date, are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Mill Cottages, Hickling (S1). The site is centred on TG 4016 2363. No dating material is available for these cropmarks, although similarly aligned enclosures and field boundaries have been recorded to the west (NHER 49330) possibly associated with Roman date material found in the area during fieldwalking and metal detecting undertaken in advance of the Bacton to Great Yarmouth pipeline (NHER 33989).
The enclosure is rectilinear or polygonal, measuring 90m by 55m, with a small annexed enclosure on the northern corner. A small subdivided area is visible within the enclosure. A possible entrance to the enclosure may be visible within the western side of the enclosure. A double ditched boundary, probably a trackway, appears to lead towards this section of the enclosure. A number of fragmentary ditches are also recorded to the west and south of the main enclosure and this are likely to be associated boundaries, possibly defining fields.
S. Massey (NMP), 30 March 2007.
