Map

March 2007. Norfolk NMP.
An area of probable post medieval peat or turf extraction is visible on aerial photographs alongside the River Ant, Catfield (S1-S2). The site is centred on TG 3702 1996. These are visible as shallow sub-rectangular cuts or scoops, some of which are water-filled, within the marsh. It is possible that these cuts represent extraction along the lines of doles. Doles were a method of ensuring access to shared resources, such as peat, on common land, where particular strips of land were allotted to individuals (S3).
