Summary

A desk based survey was undertaken on 48a and b Deneside. The site was open land within the walls, and not built on until some time around 1700. Until that time the site lay in the great open area used for the annual herring fair. Buildings on Deneside were essentially cottages. Plot 48a and b is where two of these early 18th century cottages, part of a row of seven, once stood. The two cottages once had cellars or half-basements, now filled. A watching brief undertaken during piling on the site in 2008 recorded details of the site's deposit sequence and recovered a small number of post-medieval finds.

Map

June 2006. Desk-based Assessment.
Assessment of proposed development site.
The site lies within the walled area of the medieval town, not far from the walls themselves, within the former market place. Maps and historical records show that King Street and Deneside were created in the late 17th century when this huge area, stretching from the market place in the north to Friary Street in the south, was developed. Until then, houses on the west side of King Street looked out across open land, used for ropewalks and drying nets. No 48 Deneside was therefore part of this open land within the walls, and not built on until some time around 1700. Until that time, therefore, the site lay in the great open area used for the annual herring fair.
Whilst King Street was created by building along the east side of the street (mostly large houses), those on Deneside were essentially cottages. Plot 48a and b is where two of these early 18th century cottages, part of a row of seven, once stood. The two cottages once had cellars or half-basements, now filled.

May 2008. Watching Brief.
Monitoring of piling during redevelopment of site.
This work revealed details of a soil sequence to c.8m below the present surface level. Large- grained, moist sand was encountered at about 7m depth, which contained a fragment of post-medieval brick and tile. Above this was natural beach sand to a depth of c3m. Five fragments of post-medieval brick/tile were recovered from this layer. The uppermost layer was dark black sticky loam with occasional brick/ tile fragments.
See report (S2) for further information.
The associated archive has been deposited with Norwich Castle Museum (NWHCM : 2016.169).
