Summary

The cropmarks of a small square enclosure, possibly the remains of an Iron Age or Roman square funerary monument or barrow, are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Burgh Road, Wheatacre. A central pit is visible and this may be the remains of a grave cut. An alternative interpretation for this feature is that it is a small agricultural enclosure, perhaps associated with one of the phases of fields and enclosures (NHER 44983-4).

Map

August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of a small square enclosure, possibly the remains of an Iron Age or Roman square funerary monument or barrow, are visible on aerial photographs to the north of Burgh Road, Wheatacre (S1). The site is centred on TM 4682 9471 and is located within an area of enclosures, fields and trackways, representing several phases and probably dating to the Iron Age onwards (NHER 44983-4). An alternative interpretation for this feature is that it is a small agricultural enclosure, perhaps associated with one of the phases of fields.

The ditched enclosure is roughly oblong, measuring 8m by 7m, with slightly rounded corners and a 2m wide break in the eastern ditch. An elongated pit is located within this enclosure, measuring 2m by 1.5m.
