Summary

Linear ditches visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs are likely to represent field boundaries of probable post medieval date. They may or may not be associated with Hoveton Old Hall, which lies 185m to their north (NHER 8299), or the possible site of the medieval hall, which lies immediately to their east (NHER 8298). At least some are likely to be contemporary with parts of other cropmarks sites recorded in the vicinity (e.g. NHER 49175 and 49183). A possible pit is also visible.

Map

June 2007. Norfolk NMP.
A group of linear ditches is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S2), centred at TG 3093 2006. Most have a similar orientation to the modern field pattern, and are likely to represent field boundaries of post medieval date. A few may be the product of recent agricultural activity. A pit visible at TG 3094 2028 is of a size and shape to suggest that it is a man-made feature, and it could even represent a Saxon grubenhaus. It is broadly rectangular in plan and measures approximately 5m long and 4m wide.
S. Tremlett (NMP), 5 June 2007.
