Summary

A group of multi-period enclosures, field boundaries and probable drainage ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The earliest elements could plausibly date from the late prehistoric period; the latest fit the late post medieval and modern pattern of enclosure and almost certainly date to the medieval to post medieval period. Individual elements have previously been recorded as NHER 36759, 36760 and 34543.

Map

June 2007. Norfolk NMP.
A group of multi-period enclosures, field boundaries and probable drainage ditches are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), centred at TG 3443 2324. Parts of the site have previously been recorded as NHER 36759, 36760 and 34543. Several different phases of activity are clearly represented, but it is difficult to separate these out into discrete sites. On the eastern side of the site, a long, sinuous ditch is visible, the southern end of which was previously recorded as NHER 34543. This is likely to be a drainage ditch of relatively late, post medieval date, and as such would not normally have been mapped by the NMP. It has been mapped in this instance because its northern end turns to the west, and may once have joined to western elements of the site.

On the western side of the site, at least two phases of field boundaries can be distinguished. One group, which has a dominant northwest-southeast orientation, could have originated at any time from the Iron Age onwards. The second group, which shares its orientation with the field pattern shown on historic and modern maps, is probably of medieval to post medieval date. In the same area, a number of small rectilinear enclosures are visible, ranging in size from 29.5m by 19m to 43m by 40m. Some share their orientation with the medieval/post medieval elements of the site, others with the postulated earlier phase. Some appear to be associated with a curvilinear ditch or drain (visible between TG 3424 2321 and TG 3441 2339) which may itself be connected with the drainage ditch to the east.
