Summary

A probable World War Two military site, connected with the use of radar or radio, is visible as extant structures on aerial photographs. It comprised two radar or communications towers and a hut, sited within an area of uncultivated land in the corner of a field to the north of Butcher’s Common. It is one of two such sites identified in the area, the other being NHER 49480 located 400m to the southwest. An association with the World War Two radar station at Neatishead (NHER 31218), 1.6km to the southeast, seems probable for both sites, but an alternative function, as navigation aids for Coltishall airfield, for example, cannot be ruled out. The towers (or their replacements) were still visible in 1988.

Map

June 2007. Norfolk NMP.
A probable World War Two military site, connected with the use of radar or radio (or something similarly technological in nature) is visible as a group of structures on aerial photographs (S1)-(S4), centred at TG 3380 2057. Two radar or communications towers are visible, with a hut to their north and a probable track or area of hardstanding (the latter has not been mapped by the NMP). These structures occupied an area of uncultivated ground (the extent of which has been mapped) in the corner of an arable field. The towers (or their replacements) were still visible in 1988, and like the main station at Neatishead, the site appears to have remained in use during the Cold War period.
