E. Rose (NAU).

See copy of plan in file, made to survey the course of the river before the making of the Eau Brink and harbour cuts.

October 2002. Norfolk NMP.
The Bank is depicted on the second Edition Ordnance Survey (S3) and has been mapped from that source. The bank is visible in its current position for a minimum length of 2.1 km, although it originally extended further to the west, probably as bank NHER 27079. The bank has an approximate width of 10m. It is probable that this bank is not depicted on Faden’s map (S5) from the 1790s but is depicted on the first edition Ordnance Survey 1-inch map (S4) from the 1820s, suggesting an early nineteenth date for its construction. This bank appears to post-date and replace bank NHER 27077, to its immediate west. At the time of construction this bank formed the western bank of the Great Ouse River (the Lynn Channel) although re-routing of the channel during the 1850s means that this bank is now on the eastern side of the river. The bank is named the ‘Old West Sea Bank’ on the second edition Ordnance Survey (S3).
M. Brennand (NMP), 11 October 2002.
