Summary

A complex area of multi-period cropmarks, encompassing a variety of possible functions and dates, is visible on aerial photographs. An interpretation as medieval to post medieval field boundaries for many of the features seems plausible, as they share the orientation of fields depicted on 19th century maps, and in some cases appear to represent ‘bundles’ of narrow strip fields later enclosed and amalgamated into a single parcel of land. Also visible are a number of large rectilinear pits, which could represent buildings or some form of landscaping. In addition the substantial cropmark of a palaeochannel – the upper reaches of a minor valley feeding into Barton Broad – crosses the northern part of the site.

Map

June 2007. Norfolk NMP.
Some of the cropmarks described below were previously recorded as NHER 13001.

A complex area of multi-period cropmarks is visible on aerial photographs (S1)-(S3), centred at TG 3471 2158. These encompass a wide variety of possible functions and dates, but an interpretation as medieval to post medieval field boundaries for the majority of the features seems plausible. They share the orientation of fields depicted on 19th century maps, such as Barton Turf Tithe Map (S4), and in some cases appear to represent ‘bundles’ of narrow strip fields later enclosed and amalgamated into a single parcel of land (e.g. at TG 3480 2184 and TG 3472 2146). Also visible are at least two large rectilinear pits or trenches, which could represent the sites of buildings or some form of landscaping. Some of the features in the eastern corner of the site (around TG 3498 2164) may relate to drainage. The substantial cropmark of a palaeochannel – the upper reaches of a minor valley feeding into Barton Broad – crosses the northern part of the site, but has not been mapped by the NMP.
