Summary

The cropmarks of an enclosure of unknown, but probable late prehistoric date, are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Burgh Road. The enclosure is sub-rectangular or oval in shape and is surrounded by a relatively broad ditch. It is possible that this is a Neolithic mortuary enclosure, although it is also plausible that it is a small Bronze Age or Iron Age domestic enclosure.

Map

The cropmarks of an enclosure of unknown, but probable late prehistoric date, are visible on aerial photographs to the south of Burgh Road (S1). The enclosure is sub-rectangular or oval in shape, measuring 60m by 50m, and is surrounded by a relatively broad ditch, 2-4m wide. The site is centred on TM 4727 9420. It is possible that this is a Neolithic mortuary enclosure, the dimensions and sub-rectangular shape is consistent with other recorded sites (S2). Although it is also plausible that it is a small Bronze Age or Iron Age domestic enclosure. A group of cropmarks to the immediate south and east have been interpreted as a trackway and possible fragmentary field system of late prehistoric date (NHER 44875). However there is no obvious relationship between the two groups of cropmarks. The enclosure does not exhibit the same alignment as the field boundaries and trackway. This enclosure also sits within a wider spread of multi-phase cropmarks, see NHER 44878 for details.
