Map

August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
A group of multi-period ditched cropmarks, the majority of which are probably field boundaries of unknown date, is visible on aerial photographs within the arable land surrounding Staithe Road, Burgh St Peter (S1-S3). The site is centred on TM 4749 9317, although this point does not correspond to an archaeological feature on the ground. This record deals with all of the fragmentary unphased and undated cropmarks located in-between Grays Road to the south and Wash Road to the north in Burgh St Peter parish. The cropmarks of a series of medieval to post medieval enclosures and field boundaries (NHER 36365) and a possible late prehistoric to Roman date enclosure (NHER 44925) have been recorded separately. Metal detecting within this vicinity has revealed evidence for Roman activity, see NHER 32739 for details.

To the east of ‘The Gardens’ on Staithe Road, at TM 4714 9327, is a group of field boundaries arranged either parallel or perpendicular to one another (S2). The date of these features is unknown, although they obviously predate the medieval to post medieval field boundaries recorded under NHER 36365. Other fragmentary field systems following a similar alignment within this area have been interpreted as being late prehistoric to Roman in date. Several of the boundaries within this group are double ditched and these may represent fragments of trackways. Other double ditched linears were identified across the site, at TM 4729 9319, TM 4759 9282, TM 4770 9296, TM 4779 9314, TM 4768 9340 and TM 4732 9350, although none of these appear form part of an obvious group or phase of activity. Another fragment of a field system may also be visible at TM 4741 9341 (S1).
