Map

August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The cropmarks of linear ditches are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Pitt Road, Burgh St Peter (S1-S2). It is possible that these represent fragments of field boundaries of late prehistoric to Roman date, although the archaeological origin of some of the features is uncertain. The site is centred on TG 4680 9367 and consists of two clusters of cropmarks, one to the north (S1) and one to the south (S2). The majority of the cropmarks appear to represent ditched boundaries, aligned either NE-SW or NW-SE, and are possibly the fragments of field system. To the south, centred on TG 4676 9359, is a possible incomplete enclosure, potentially measuring 53m by 36m. Although appearance of the cropmarks is a little too inconclusive to interpret them with any certainty. Many of the cropmarks are quite faint and it is possible that some are of agricultural origin. The site consists of several narrow strips of different crops and some of the crops look quite sparse in places, although this may be due to crop being more widely spaced than cereals crops. These cropmarks are also located on an area of clay and therefore may be less responsive with regards normal cropmark production.
