Full Description
August 2006. Norfolk NMP.
The parchmarks of a possible former World War Two defensive site may be visible on aerial photographs to the immediate south of Greenways Farm, Burgh St Peter (S1). The site is centred on TM 4689 9293. Further possible World War Two sites have been identified to the south on Boon’s Heath (NHER 44911).
In October 1945 a series of circular and rectilinear parchmarks or worn patches in grass may indicate the former position of military defensive structures. No structures remain at this date. These eroded or parched locations are linked by a series of linear paths. A broadly rectangular disturbed area at the eastern side of the field may indicate the former position of a shelter hut or generator house. The circular areas of worn ground could suggest that a structure such as a gun emplacement or searchlight on a pedestal was positioned at that location. The remains of a former gun or searchlight battery has been tentatively identified within the quarry 275m to the south (NHER 44911). It is possible that this is a searchlight associated with an anti-aircraft gun located to the south.
S. Massey (NMP), 10 August 2006.
